The Ten Talents Foundation was started to help developing non-profits in the Louisville community grow and achieve their missions. We like to give those organization as much time in the spotlight as we can, so this month we’re profiling Access Justice, who provides access to free, quality legal help and affordable legal services to those who need it, regardless of their age, ability or disability, sex, ethnicity, nationality, religion, or sexual orientation. At weekly and monthly clinics, volunteer attorneys provide clients who have no hope of a voice in or understanding of the daily proceedings of the legal system with 45-60 minutes of pro bono legal advice and counsel.
The clinics include the legal services like:
- Legal “Urgent Care” Services, in which the Access Justice addresses a client’s specific legal needs. Clients are educated as to their rights and trained on how to file court documents, prepare documents and pleadings and negotiate to protect their rights.
- Referrals to other Attorneys and Legal Organizations, when needed. The Access Justice team often contacts other approved attorneys and legal aid providers and makes every effort to refer clients for ongoing legal representation. They also refer certain cases to AJ Law, the legal services division of our organization.
- Consulting with Nonprofit Organizations to provide clients assistance in forming nonprofit 501(c)(3) faith-based organizations and provide guidance in the operation of those organizations.
- Education Seminars to give clients an overview of their general legal rights in various areas of the law. These seminars may include topics such as expungement rights; tax preparation; immigration issues; estate planning; custody issues; conflict resolution; debtor creditor issues; and landlord tenant issues. Access Justice also provides educational training for its attorney and paralegal volunteers to provide CLE approved seminars on areas of the law it experiences most regularly at our clinics.
To hear first-hand about the good work that Access Justice is doing, watch the interview below with a client, Raymond, who has benefited directly. In it, he tells how he recovered from the damages in his childhood and teen years to freedom from legal troubles with the help of Access Justice.
