Churchill’s Lighthouse, a sanctuary for unhoused women and teens in Louisville, is nearly done with the renovation of a home in the Shawnee neighborhood.
The Churchill’s Lighthouse Home will ultimately become a safe haven for pregnant women and teens experiencing homelessness.
“I’m trying not to get emotional because God gave me this vision in 2017,” said Sherri Churchill, founder and executive director. “And here we are, 2025. … I know when you do the drywall, then you start the painting and then everything else comes into fruition.”
“To be here today and to see how far it’s come along, it is such a blessing, and I’m so excited. Oh, I cannot wait. Oh, my gosh.”
Churchill said the passion stems from her own life.
“I know how it feels to be a teen mom, a young mom, not having the income to help raise children,” she said. “Churchill’s Lighthouse illuminated paths to parenthood.”
Donors got a sneak peek at the renovations. Valerie Terry, director of communications for Ten Talents Foundation, which assists Louisville-based nonprofits rooted in our neighborhoods, said she’s excited for the six mothers who will benefit from this home once completed, giving them a safe place.
“We need more homes like Churchill’s Lighthouse,” Terry said. “We need more, and we need to support these young women at whatever cost, whatever that may look like, because they’re our future. We’ve got to empower them, and it’s not over when you have a child; sometimes, it’s just the beginning.”
Churchill said she wishes there was a place like this when she was a teen mom. The home will not only serve as a temporary home for unhoused pregnant women and teens but is tied with resources to set them up for future success.
“We have a financial class that we’re going to be starting to help with their finances, get their credit together, and then maybe they’ll be ready to purchase a home,” Churchill said.
Churchill’s Lighthouse Home is expected to complete renovations and be fully open by the end of the year.
